Kevin Walker

My Story

I speak German and have served as an elder in my congregation as well as 'front-line' ministries like foodbanks and reading buddy programs. Professionally I have done graduate work in religious studies, regularly tutour language students and work with international seafarers' ministries. My overriding motive is wanting to find a way to respond to the wars that continue to kill and displace human beings, each of whom we believe share the likeness of God and the flesh of Jesus. Berlin is where many of the refugees in Europe are, my congregation knows a ministry there that could use an extra set of hands, and I happen to know the language and have a number of the relevant skills - at a certain point I was asking 'If not me, who?' So, with the permission of my extremely patient partner, I am going. In the future I hope that the Willkommensgemeinde can be left in the best possible position to continue its work, but also that coming back I can better understand what refugees and migrant labourers need from Christians and that that can inform me and my community's work.

Mission

Cohort Europe offers a year-long missional experience in which participants serve in local European ministry organizations and connect with other Cohort Europe team members to learn together, support each other, and grow spiritually. I will serve with the Welcome Church, one of 15 congregations of the Berliner Stadtmision (Berlin City Mission), a more than 145-year-old Christian organization in Berlin. The Welcome Church welcomes newcomers to Berlin through language cafes for learning German and worship services in easy German. I am looking forward to making a difference for someone who needs it.
