Context Guadalajara, located about seven hours west of Mexico City, is the capital of Jalisco State. With more than five million inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Mexico. Known as “more Mexican than Mexico itself,” Guadalajara is the birthplace of mariachi music, tequila, and the Mexican hat dance. As a conservative Roman Catholic stronghold, ninety-two percent of tapatíos (people from Guadalajara) consider themselves Roman Catholic, while only 3% of people consider themselves evangelical Christians. Unfortunately, most Roman Catholics live at one of two extremes: widespread ignorance about the Christian faith or fanatic devotion to the Virgin Mary and the saints (with little to no mention of Christ). Mission Work We strive to carry out our mission in reliance on the Holy Spirit and in concert with our Mexican and international co-workers in Guadalajara and beyond. In the bustling metropolis of Guadalajara we have forged a close partnership with the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico, particularly Christ the Redeemer Church and its array of ministries. For close to fifteen years we have invested our time and efforts in church planting and leadership development. In 2016 we began to plant New Life Church, another daughter church of Christ the Redeemer, on the south side of Guadalajara with a wonderful core team. On a national level Ben is a consultant for Multiplication Network Ministries striving for "More Churches, Stronger Churches." This involves working with several different denominations to train and mentor church planter trainers and to learn to "take the pulse" of their churches. As of June 2018, 1,878 church planters had been trained or were in training all over Mexico resulting in 1,053 new churches since this partnership began in 2010. I think: ‘God, in the past, I lived in the desert for 40 years,” said Fabiola. But this year, Fabiola has new hope for her future—hope that can only come from Christ. Six years ago, Fabiola, her husband, and their daughter made the difficult decision to move a six-hour drive away from family and friends in Mexico City to live in Guadalajara, where Resonate Global Mission missionaries Ben and Amy Meyer serve.CONTINUE READING August 5, 2020Why Church MattersThe church in North America is shrinking. People are leaving. People are identifying as religious “nones.” Church doors are closing. But as we learned during the COVID-19 crises, church matters. The community church provides makes a difference within and without the four walls of a building. “Church is a living illustration or picture of an alternative life—one that is focused on following Jesus and his ways,” said Kevin DeRaaf, who directs ministry in North America for Resonate Global Mission.
