A refugee camp in the Middle East

Girgis and Sara were on the verge of leaving the field. You helped provide the support and care they needed in order to stay.

Living in a Strange Land

Girgis and Sara are missionaries from a country in the Middle East where some of your Resonate missionaries serve. The couple serves in a neighboring country through another sending organization, ministering with refugees. They build relationships with newcomers and connect them with necessary resources such as food, medical care, and healing for trauma.

Where Girgis and Sara serve, it’s not always safe to be Christian. You have to be careful about sharing your faith—but in the couple’s work with refugees, it’s a “kairos” moment to share the gospel.

“By being a refugee, people have the freedom to listen to God’s story, whereas sometimes in their own home country they can’t. This allows God’s message to fall on fertile soil,” said Hannah, one of your Resonate missionaries.

But like the people they minister with, Girgis and Sara are also living away from their homeland. While the culture is similar, there are still differences—and the language is different too. Their relationship with their sending organization became strained, and after three years of hard work they were burned out and discouraged. Girgis and Sara were ready to pack their bags.

“They were broken,” said Hannah.

But you helped to provide care and counseling for Girgis and Sara.

Healing from Pain

One of Hannah’s roles as a missionary in the Middle East is to support other missionaries who may not receive much-needed care. As a missionary herself, she knows how important that support is for healthy ministry.

Hannah met with Girgis and Sara for a week. The couple spent an entire day sharing their stories, and Hannah helped them to start processing grief. They spent a lot of time reading Scripture.

By being a refugee, people have the freedom to listen to God’s story, whereas sometimes in their own home country they can’t. This allows God’s message to fall on fertile soil.

“We took some time to really look at Jesus’ role in [their lives],” said Hannah. “We know Jesus as the one who takes our sin upon himself, but he also bears our pain.”

Hannah said the work was tiring—but in a good way. Girgis and Sara were able to start healing from pain, and by the end of the week they felt hopeful again.

Renewed for Ministry

Thank you for making this work possible! Girgis and Sara returned to the field with renewed excitement for their ministry, and Hannah helped them make an action plan for receiving the support they needed. Hannah has been meeting with them through video calls once a month, and both Girgis and Sara have a dedicated prayer partner and mentor. They will also set aside time for Sabbath every week to spend time with God and their children.

“It rejuvenates me when I see someone go from brokenness to seeing hope again,” said Hannah.

Thank you for supporting missionaries like Hannah who provide care and counseling for missionaries who are feeling broken and discouraged!
