The past year began with giving more of myself over to God, and opening my heart to the idea of long term missions. God brought about so many conversations and situations leading me to invest in a missions assignment to Managua, Nicaragua. Tesoros de Dios (literally translated to “God’s Treasures”) provides therapy and services to children and adolescents with disabilities and their families in a non-residential setting. In a cultural climate where there is almost no social aid and those with different levels of ability are devalued, I am so honored to be a part of this incredible counter-cultural community. It has been so powerful to witness the restoring love of Jesus in day to day therapies and to help the children reach more of their potential.
I have been serving as a therapy assistant and a special needs classroom assistant for a short time, but will be taking over the position of Volunteer Coordinator for the next year. This will mean working in a more administrative way, and supporting other volunteers who come to help out here. I’ve also been blessed to be able to start a music program here! There are children from each of our programs here who come and spend a short time each day making music, socializing, and reinforcing the lessons they are learning in both physical therapy and special education. I’ve been so blessed to witness the joy they bring to these sessions and the way music encourages, challenges, calms, and excites each child in a different way.
I have accepted the position of Volunteer Coordinator here in Tesoros, and I hope to do that for the next year. In the past few months I’ve been immersed into the culture and language of Nicaragua. I’ve witnessed worship from a new perspective, and experienced the unity of the body of Christ here.
For this next year, I’m so eager to be spending each day actively working towards the kingdom of God, and being built up through worship, relationships, and the work at Tesoros de Dios. I’m also excited to grow in my faith and experience a deeper walk with God, and plan to do that by getting plugged into the community here. God is doing so much in Nicaragua right now, and there is a huge community of people who are committed to sharing God’s word and investing in the many situations and lives that need the healing and restoring love of Jesus.
