About Abby

My Story

I recently graduated from Calvin University with a degree in political science. During my time at Calvin, I was able to focus my studies on political philosophy and international relations. My academic experiences propelled my interests deeper into the world of intercultural communication, global citizenship, and humanitarian relief. I had the opportunity to travel abroad to Denmark, where I studied refugee law, developed a passion for humanitarian issues, and first heard God calling me to give my hands to this work.

Though this work is not what I had planned for myself, I can retrospectively see all the ways God has prepared me for this service. I am excited to continue with my intercultural education and gain a deeper empathy and understanding of the problems facing refugees in Hungary today. I hope to take the lessons I learn during this time into a long career focused on humanitarian relief and global development.

Mission

I will be serving as a Refugee Ministry Cohort Intern. The majority of my time will be spent with the Reformed Church in Hungary Refugee Ministry. The Reformed Church in Hungary is a sister denomination to the Christian Reformed Church in North America, and their refugee ministry is part of a diaconal branch of the church. Another portion of my time will be helping to lay the groundwork for a young adult Cohort Europe site to launch in the future. Finally, I will be learning—about Hungarian language, culture, and geography; about refugee work in a Hungarian church context; and about God, Christian community, and myself.

Prayer Requests

Prayers of Safe Keeping: This position will require traveling through parts of the world that are currently unsettled, and I would like to ask for prayers of safekeeping for all those displaced or in transit in the region.

Prayers of Guidance: I would appreciate prayers of continued clarity and guidance on how I can best serve while in Budapest and continue to serve this ministry after my assignment has ended.
